Meet The Directors For 2018!

Cardiff Open Air Theatre Festival is proud of its professional links with local professionals, many of whom have a long-standing relationships with the festival.

In 2018, we’re delighted to welcome back Director & Choreographer, Richard Tunley to lead the production of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’. His previous productions at the festival, such as ‘Sweet Charity’, ‘Guys & Dolls’, ‘Sweeney Todd’ ,’Into The Woods’ and of course last year’s smash hit ‘Spamalot’ demonstrate his unique skills at translating much loved musicals to our outdoor theatre space.

Joining Richard on the creative team for ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ is Rob Thorne Jr as Musical Director. Drawing on his vast experience and expertise in this field and following his Musical Direction of ‘Into The Woods’ & ‘Spamalot’, we know music lovers are in for a treat!.


We are delighted to welcome back the acclaimed Peter Doran to our Festival! Peter’s popular and hugely comical productions of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’,’As You Like It’ and ‘The Merchant of Venice’ for Cardiff Open Air Theatre Festival at St Fagan’s are fondly remembered and we are excited to have him at the helm of our comedy ‘Dad’s Army’ this year.

As Artistic Director of the Torch and with a wealth of experience as a performer and Director, Peter is equipped to dill The Home Guard in hat we’re sure will be a comedy classic!

In 2002 he won Best Production in Wales for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and in 2003 for Of Mice and Men. In 2005 he won the Theatre Managers Association/UK Theatre, Theatre Director of the Year; in 2016, he won best production for Grav; and in 2017 Best Director for Belonging at the Wales Theatre Awards. In 2006 Peter was made a Fellow of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.


Simon H West returns for his 13th production as a Director for the festival this year! Having directed our Light Entertainment productions of ‘Fawlty Towers’, ‘Blackadder’ and ‘Allo ‘Allo’, Simon returns to the Shakespeare segment of the festival, where he began in 2001 when he directed ‘Twelfth Night’. This year he lends his creative talents to direct, ‘The Merchant Of Venice’.


AndGo Productions and Emma-Jayne Parker return to direct our Family Production. Having directed the past five magnificent productions in this category, Alice In Wonderland, The Little Mermaid, Beauty & The Beast, Peter Pan and Aladdin we know the families of Cardiff are in for another treat!
